A «General Pracitioner» is a health professional covering a wide range of urgent or regular illnesses. It is an autonomous specialty of Primary Medical Care, which aims to treat acute and chronic health problems immediately and primarily or, if needed, to refer patients to further clinical examinations. GPs and their service have gained a following in recent years. The same is happening now in Greece, where General Practitioners systematically monitor their patients at the family level (Family Doctor) and of course in areas open to tourists.
It is important not to confuse a General Practitioner with an Internist, as they are parts of two different medical specialties with different roles. A General Practitioner is called upon to deal with almost every possible case on a first level (pediatric, surgical, dermatological, gynecological, generally the entire primary range of medical specialties), while an Internist may specialize in a field. Also, a General Practitioner can take care of patients of all ages, in contrast to the Internist, who takes care of adult patients.
In other words, a General Practitioner:
- Intervenes immediately and preventively in order to address the medical problem.
- Is oriented toward patients of all ages and all diseases, from children and adolescents to the elderly.
- can treat a variety of ailments, including respiratory infections, injuries, musculoskeletal problems, skin diseases, gastrointestinal and urinary tract infections. He/she can also take care of chronic conditions such as diabetes, high blood pressure, heart arrhythmias or mental illness.
- In addition to the examination, he/she can prescribe medicine and issue referrals for many examinations.
- Ιs a valuable ally in the immediate prevention or treatment of Covid-19, especially in areas where access to hospital care is difficult.
